DON MORRIS AND DENE OEHME WERE ELECTED AS LIFE MEMBERS

DON MORRIS started sailing Herons at Grange in the 70’s, moved to Henley for a spell, swapped to a Lazy E (National E) and later to 125’s for a while at the Port River Club.  He finally settled at Grange Club about 14 years ago training juniors and operating Course and Rescue boats.   He put in 3 or 4 years offsiding Chris Sherman in the Start Boat becoming Commodore in 1996 and taking up the joint position of Officer of the Day in 1997.  Over the years he has built 4 Herons, 2 Holdfast Trainers, 1 Lazy E and 2 125’s.   Still Commodore and O.O.D. he answers to the nickname “Mitsubishi”.

DENE OEHME is in his 20th year in Grange Club Rescue and Course Boats.   Whilst not stated, there’s a hint of influence of his late father Colin, a much sought after for’ard hand in 12 sq m. Sharpies in the last days of the former club premises at Terminus St.   Dene put in one short, (very), stint in Mirrors and was not impressed.  Obviously he was not completely disenchanted and now owns and sails a Compass 28 “New Horizons” with his family including his two sons Lloyd (5) and Angas (8).  The latter is about ready to hit the Holdfast Trainer fleet so we have a good chance of hanging on to Dene – rated one of the best in the game – for a while yet.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH OLD SALTS.

--oo0oo—

INCOMING PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT Michael Marshman (50) and Hayden Jones (48) both put their hand up for the jobs on a joint ticket and were elected unanimously, filling the gaps left by retiring President Geoff Johnstone and the untimely loss of Charlie Kiroff.    After consultation with Geoff and (Then Immediate Past President) Barry Cronin, they established a firm base and were elected unopposed.

Both are in the Building Industry, live in the area and are heading into their second year of membership.  Both are former keel boat sailors and jointly owned the Farr 40 “Prime Factor” at the CYC, taking out variously the Inshore Series  Handicap, Inshore Series IMS, Off Shore Series Handicap, Off Shore IMS, Twilight Series, and being twice “Boat of the Year” between 1993 and 1998.  Both have had a crack at crewing in Sharpies, including the Lincoln Nationals and have a stated interest in sailing, the Grange Club and its future.

PATRON AND VICE PATRON elected subject to acceptance were, -

Harold Anderson – Mayor of the City of Charles Sturt and

Chris Gallus         - Federal Member for Hindmarsh.

HON. AUDITOR , F.J. Dennehy, subject to acceptance.

SUB COMMITTEES  are an essential part of the machinery of Club operation and management.   Whilst not locked up in the Constitution, they are set up in a ‘By-Law’ which, although it can be rescinded or changed by  General Committee at any time, has virtually been unchanged since 1971.   Each has a delegated authority under it’s named function and the right to co-opt additional or replacement members.  Each must report to General Committee monthly and one of it’s number must be an elected General Management Committee member.
